The Stayton Fire District currently has 3 of its own firefighters out of a group of 12 that have just reached the half way mark of their firefighter academy. Every new firefighter joins an academy which is designed to teach them the skills required to handle the tasks of a line firefighter. The Santiam Academy is the local academy which draws the firefighters from around the Santiam Canyon. This academy started late February and will wrap up with a graduation ceremony on June 17th.

Some of the topics taught in academy include:

  • Firefighter Safety and Health
  • Fire Behavior - Building Construction
  • Forcible Entry
  • Ground Ladders
  • Structural Search & Firefighter Survival
  • Ropes, Webbing, Knots and Portable Fire Extinguishers
  • Tactical Ventilation and Water Supply
  • Traffic Control
  • Hazardous Materials
  • Driver Safety
  • Fire Control/Loss Control
  • + Online coursework with fire science and more.

Our firefighters who are currently attending academy are Brad Huberts, Genna Higdon and Jeff Harris Jr.  Keep up the great work!
