Burning Questions: People, Forests, & Fire

Lectures focus on wildfire

The 2016 Starker Lecture Series kicks off later this month with the first of several planned talks on ways to adapt to the increasing number and severity of wildfires in Oregon.

OFRI is one of the sponsors of this year's lecture series, "Burning Questions: People, Forests, & Fire." The free public talks will address what some are calling the "new normal" of living with fire in Oregon.

The lecture series starts Jan. 28 with a screening of the film "Legacy of Fire: The Story of the Tillamook Burn" and a talk by Oregon State Forester Doug Decker. The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Whiteside Theatre, 361 S.W. Madison Ave., in Corvallis.

Next month, University of California Berkeley forest science professor Scott Stephens will give a lecture titled "Fire Ecology, Management and Policy in the Western U.S.: Challenges but with Great Possibilities." The lecture will start at 3:30 p.m., Feb. 18 at the LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus in Corvallis.

Steve Quarles, a senior scientist with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, will give a third lecture, "Exposure of Buildings to Wildfire: Vulnerabilities and Mitigation Strategies," March 3 in Bend. The talk starts at 3:30 p.m. at the Riverhouse Hotel.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension natural resource specialist Ed Smith is scheduled to give a talk April 7 and a workshop April 8 on "Living with Fire." Smith's lecture and workshop will both be held at the LaSells Stewart Center.
