Volunteer firefighters serve from four fire stations across our district — including Stayton, Mehama, Marion, and Elkhorn — responding to emergencies that impact lives, homes, and the heart of our community.

What Do Volunteer Firefighters Do?
Our volunteers are trained to respond to a wide range of emergency incidents, including:
- Structure Fires
- Wildland Fires
- Medical Emergencies
- Motor Vehicle Accidents
- Search and Rescue Operations
- Hazardous Materials Incidents
- Public Assists and Community Support Calls
Fire/EMS Volunteer Program Options
We offer multiple tracks based on your interest and physical abilities:- Firefighter/EMS Member: Responds to all types of fire and EMS calls, including structure fires, rescues, and medical emergencies. Requires full protective gear and SCBA training.
- Non-Entry Firefighter/EMS Member: Assists at emergency scenes but does not operate in hazardous environments requiring Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
- Water Tender Operator: Operates a water tender vehicle and assists with water supply and support operations at fire scenes.

Who Can Join?
Basic Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Live or work within the District or within 3 miles of a Stayton Fire District station
- Hold a valid Oregon Driver’s License
- Maintain a clean driving and criminal record
- Be in good physical health
- Be willing and able to attend at least 50% of scheduled training drills per quarter
- Have a genuine desire to help others and serve your community
How to Join the Team:
- Submit a District Interest Card or use the online form below
- Complete a Board of Review with department leadership
- Interview with the Fire Chief
- Pass a background check and DMV record review
- Complete a physical exam and drug screening
